Key Competencies

Key competencies are the capabilities people have, and need to develop, to live and learn today and in the future.

The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies:
  • Thinking
  • Relating to others
  • Using language, symbols and text
  • Managing self
  • Participating and contributing
  • How well can your child think for themselves and think with others?
  • How well does your child relate to other children, kaiako and whānau?
  • How well is your child able to use language, symbols and text to communicate?
  • How well is your child able to manage themselves in the home environment and in the school environment?
  • How well is your child able to participate and contribute to learning experiences, discussions and group activities?
